“We’re sending out a message that speeding costs a lot and it’s dangerous,” said Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Louis-Philippe Ruel.

The latest cases came to light after SQ officers were led on a 12-kilometre high-speed chase early Tuesday after trying to stop an 18-year-old driver going almost twice the speed limit on the Décarie Expressway. He faces a $1,330 fine with 14 demerit points.

The SQ has since added two more incidents:

Last Thursday, a man was clocked doing 170 km/h in a 70-km/h zone on the Monseigneur-Langlois bridge in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield at 5:45 a.m. He faces a fine of $1,855 with 18 demerit points. On Monday just before 6 p.m., a man was pulled over after driving 153 km/h in a 90-km/h zone on Route 249 in St-Georges-de-Windsor in the Eastern Townships. He was fined $1,255 with 14 demerit points. Article content Advertisement 3 Story continues below This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Article content

All three lost their licences for a week.

Under Quebec’s Highway Safety Code, drivers caught speeding excessively face increasingly higher penalties.

For example, a second offence results in an immediate 30-day license suspension. And the vehicle is impounded for 30 days if both offences were committed in a zone where the speed limit is 60 km/h or lower.

In the case of a third offence, the person’s license is immediately suspended for 60 days if all three events were in a zone of 60-km/h or lower. The vehicle is impounded if the latest offence and either of the other two were committed in a zone where the limit is 60 km/h or less.

Ruel said he doesn’t know whether excessive speeding is a growing problem, or whether drivers hit the gas more when the weather is nicer.

The SQ publicizes some cases to remind drivers of the penalties and the dangers associated with driving at reckless speeds, he said.

“These weren’t highways,” Ruel said of the cases in Valleyfield and the Eastern Townships.

“There’s a reason why these roads have lower speed limits. There’s a possibility that cars may be joining the traffic, for example. Or there’s a curve and cars may be stopped ahead or animals may be on the road.”

Quebec defines excessive speeding as driving at a speed that exceeds the limit by:

40 km/h or more in a zone where the speed limit is 60 km/h or lower. 50 km/h or more in a zone where the speed limit is over 60 km/h and up to 90 km/h. 60 km/h or more in a zone where the speed limit is 100 km/h or over.

Speeding is a leading cause of fatal accidents, and the risk of being involved in a crash increases when vehicles are going faster than the speed limit, the SQ said.

Every year, speed is a factor in accidents that cause about 115 deaths and about 420 serious injuries on Quebec roads, the force said.
